How to Perform a Breast Self-Exam

Monthly breast self-exams are a simple tool that can save lives. Performing one regularly allows you to learn how your breasts normally feel and detect changes early.

Best time to do it: Between 3 and 5 days after your period starts, when breasts are less tender. If you have gone through menopause, choose a fixed day each month.

Steps in front of a mirror:

  • Stand with your arms at your sides and look at both breasts for changes in size, shape, or skin color
  • Raise both arms above your head and repeat the visual check
  • Place your hands on your hips, tighten your muscles, and check for any dimpling or irregularities
  • Steps lying down:

  • Lie down and place a pillow under your right shoulder; put your right arm behind your head
  • Using the three middle fingers of your left hand, make firm but gentle circular movements from the nipple outward, covering the entire breast
  • Repeat on the left breast
  • Also check your armpits, where swollen lymph nodes may appear
  • See a doctor right away if you notice:

  • A new lump or thickening in the breast or armpit
  • Changes in the size or shape of the breast
  • Dimpling, puckering, or bulging of the skin
  • Redness, flaking, or crusting around the nipple
  • Nipple discharge (especially if bloody)
  • Persistent pain in a specific area
  • Our gynecology services in Houston include personalized self-exam instruction during every visit.

    Menopause: Symptoms and Treatment Options

Menopause is a natural stage in every woman's life, but its symptoms can significantly affect quality of life. At Clínica Hispana La Caridad, we care for many Hispanic women in Houston who are looking for clear, Spanish-language guidance on how to manage this transition.

    Most common menopause symptoms

  • Hot flashes and night sweats: Sudden waves of heat that can last 1 to 5 minutes
  • Vaginal dryness and irritation: Caused by declining estrogen, can affect intimate life
  • Mood changes and irritability: Hormonal fluctuations that impact emotional well-being
  • Sleep problems: Difficulty falling or staying asleep
  • Bone density loss: Greater risk of osteoporosis after menopause
  • Changes in weight and fat distribution
  • Available treatment options

Hormone Therapy (HT): Estrogen alone or combined with progesterone. It is the most effective treatment for hot flashes and vaginal dryness. Your doctor will evaluate whether it is appropriate for you based on your health history.

    Non-hormonal treatments:

  • Low-dose antidepressants (for intense hot flashes)
  • Vaginal lubricants and creams without hormones
  • Calcium and vitamin D supplements to protect bones
  • Dietary changes and regular exercise
  • Natural remedies with limited evidence:

  • Phytoestrogens (soy, red clover) — discuss with your doctor before using
  • Stress management techniques and meditation
  • Don't suffer in silence. Talk to our Houston medical team to find the plan that best fits your situation.

    Sexual Health and STI Prevention

Sexual health is an integral part of a woman's overall well-being. Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are more common than many people realize, and often produce no symptoms, which is why regular testing is essential.

    Why get tested for STIs?

    • Many STIs like chlamydia and gonorrhea cause no symptoms until they have already damaged reproductive organs
    • Untreated HIV can progress without visible signs for years
    • Early diagnosis allows for effective treatment and prevents complications such as infertility
    • It protects your health and your partner's

    STIs we evaluate and treat

    • Chlamydia and gonorrhea: The most common bacterial STIs; treatable with antibiotics
    • Syphilis: Detectable with a blood test; very treatable in early stages
    • HIV: Rapid testing available; with modern treatment it is a manageable condition
    • Genital herpes: Management of outbreaks and reduction of transmission risk
    • HPV (Human Papillomavirus): Related to cervical changes detected on Pap smears
    • Trichomoniasis: Parasitic infection treatable with oral medication

    Prevention

    • Consistent use of male or female condoms
    • HPV vaccine (available up to age 45 in many cases)
    • Open communication with your partner about recent testing
    • Annual gynecological checkups as part of your health routine

Our sexually transmitted disease services are completely confidential and conducted in an environment of respect and trust. We also offer comprehensive family planning that includes sexual health counseling and contraception.
